Students’ membership fees
As a student you will pay the membership fee, if the work time condition is fulfilled. This requires that you work 18 hours a week or teach 8 hours a week. Otherwise students are exempt from paying membership fees. The work does not need to be in your own field.
The membership fee shall not be paid for student allowance or grants.
The membership fee is the same regardless of whether you are only a member of the professional organisation or whether through the organisation you are also a member of the unemployment fund. The Translation Industry Professionals membership fee is 1% of the gross pay.
The membership fee can be deducted in taxes in full.
Gather earnings-related benefits already while studying
A student member in Translation Industry Professionals can gather an earnings-related benefit already from the employments during studies, for example in summer work. The work time requirement of the earnings-related daily allowance accrues if you work a minimum of 18 hours per week or teach 8 hours a week. A full employment requirement requires 34 of these kinds of working weeks during the membership period. As a full-time student you can collect these working weeks for seven years while working part-time during your studies or for example when working during summer holidays.
You can receive earnings-related daily allowance after you have been a member of the unemployment fund for a minimum of 34 weeks. In addition, the above mentioned employment requirement must be fulfilled.
A further requirement is that the pay has been according to the collective labour agreement. If the field does not have a collective labour agreement, the pay for a full-time job must be a minimum of 1052 euros per month (in 2010).
Students should keep the pay slips, work certificates and any possible hour lists. When necessary, the Unemployment Fund for the Specially Trained (ERKO) will request a clarification of the income and ask to fill in the weekly hour clarification.
