Becoming an authorised translator through a degree

The degree of an authorised translator is a specialisation degree in the field of translation. It is not a language degree or a system training to become a general translator.

The title of an authorised translator can be received by a person who has completed the degree of an authorised translator. In addition, the person applying for the authorised translator title must be a trustworthy person of age who has not been declared incompetent. The person must have domicile in Finland or a permanent residence in a member country of the European Union or other country in the European Economic Area.

The title of an authorised translator is national, which means that an authorised translator is only qualified in Finland. 

The right to function as an authorised translator is granted by the degree board of authorised translators based on an application.

Passing the authorised translator test is not required if a person has completed a Master of Philosophy degree or other higher university degree that includes translation studies of a minimum of 60 credits. These studies must include both theoretical and practical translation studies in the university. The studies must also include the studies of authorised translation in the amount of 6 credits. 

The right to function as an authorised translator can then be granted in the language pair included in the degree solely to the mother tongue or the tongue that the person commands the best (working language A).
