Jobs and employment
A translator works in the public and private sector in different kinds of tasks requiring knowledge of language and culture. According to the working-related statistics (2005) of Statistics Finland, in 2005 there were about 3000 translators and interpreters.

Professionals members work in the private sector, i.e. employed by translation
agencies, other private companies and business life.
In the public sector the major employers are ministries and
municipalities.
Translators and interpreters are also offered work
by international organisations. Some of the
most significant of these for Finnish-language translators and interpreters are
the different functions of the EU.
Translators also work as researchers and teachers
in the universities and in other schools. In
addition, the hand print of translators can be seen in literature translations
and AV products, such as in TV, video and movie subtitles.
Many translators and interpreters also
function as freelancers, self-employed people or entrepreneurs.
Those with a degree in the translation
industry can also be employed as technical communicators, proofreaders,
terminologists, public relations people as well as coordinators and project
manages in translation agencies and in different projects.
