Translation Industry Professionals

Translation Industry Professionals (Käännösalan asiantuntijat KAJ) is a trade organisation for translators, interpreters and other experts in the field of translation and multilingual communication.

Translation Industry Professionals oversees the conditions of employment, salaries and other benefits of its members and promotes and develops the training of translators and interpreters. It also aims to raise the appreciation of the translation and interpreting professions and works as a liaison for its members.

The translators’ trade union (Kääntäjien ammattijärjestö) was founded in 1979. In 2009 the union changed its name to Käännösalan asiantuntijat KAJ (Translation Industry Professionals). Presently the organisation includes over 2100 members who work as translators and interpreters and in many other demanding positions in the field of languages, translation and multilingual communication. Approximately 72% of Translation Industry Professionals’ members work in the private sector, 25% in the public sector and 3% are self-employed.

Typical occupational titles are translator, interpreter, technical writer, localization expert, terminologist, project manager or coordinator.

Translation Industry Professionals and Akava Special Branches safeguard together members’ interests

Akava Special Branches is comprised 25 independent member organisations. All individual members are members of Akava Special Branches through Translation Industry Professionals. Akava Special Branches is a part of Akava.

Translation Industry Professionals’ board is in charge of supervising the professional interests in the field of translation and comments on the statements from ministries and contributes to the preparation of legislation and other regulations. It gives background support to Akava Special Branches in developing occupational life and solving problem points in occupational life.

Translation Industry Professionals’ members receive supervision of their professional interests and expert help and many other membership benefits through their own organization and through Akava Special Branches.
